How Long Does a Job Posting Stay Open ?

How long does a job posting stay online - melting clocks inspired by Dalí

We tracked hundreds of thousands of job postings on LinkedIn and Indeed in France to measure how long they remain open. The results vary dramatically by platform, industry, and seniority level. If you are not checking frequently enough, you might be missing opportunities that were never there when you looked.

What We Measured

We looked at job postings published on LinkedIn and Indeed in France during March and April 2026. For each posting that was later marked as expired or closed, we measured the time between when it was first published and when it was last seen on the platform.

This does not tell us when someone was hired. A job posting can disappear because the role was filled, because the employer removed it, because it expired automatically, or because it was reposted. What it does tell us is how long the posting was visible to job seekers.

The Overall Picture

On LinkedIn France, the median job posting stays open for 19 days. Half of all postings disappear within less than three weeks. By day 31, more than 73% are gone. Only 8% last longer than 45 days.

LinkedIn France, March-April 2026. 378K expired or closed postings.

On Indeed France, postings disappear much faster. The median is between 1 and 10 days depending on the industry. Some categories like Transportation and Installation & repair have a median of just 1 day.

This means that if you check Indeed once a week, you might already be too late for half the postings in some industries.

LinkedIn vs Indeed: Different Clocks

Across every single industry, Indeed postings stay visible for roughly half the time compared to LinkedIn. This is not a small difference.

Median days visible. France, March-April 2026.

In Computer & math, LinkedIn postings last a median of 17 days. On Indeed, 3 days. In Transportation, LinkedIn lasts 21 days, Indeed just 1. In Education, LinkedIn postings stay up for 26 days, Indeed for 4.

This does not mean Indeed fills roles faster. It means the posting window is shorter. The job might still be open, but the listing is no longer visible. Indeed employers may use shorter posting cycles, refresh listings more often, or let them expire and repost.

For job seekers, the practical implication is clear: if you are searching on Indeed, you need to check more frequently than on LinkedIn. A weekly check on LinkedIn might be enough. On Indeed, it is not.

By Industry

The variation across industries is significant. On LinkedIn, Social services postings last a median of 11 days, while Education & library postings last 30 days. That is almost a 3x difference on the same platform.

On Indeed, the fastest industries are Installation & repair and Transportation at 7 days. The slowest are Social services and Agriculture at 14 days. The spread is narrower than LinkedIn, but the overall lifespan is much shorter.

By Seniority Level

Entry level169,8527d18d31d
Mid-Senior level84,9367d15d31d

LinkedIn France, March-April 2026.

On LinkedIn, executive positions stay visible the longest at 26 days median. Mid-senior roles close the fastest among experienced positions at 15 days. Entry level sits at 18 days.

This makes sense. Executive searches are longer, more selective processes. The posting stays up while the company evaluates a smaller pool of candidates. Mid-senior roles often have clearer requirements and move faster.

Temporary vs Permanent

TypeMedian
Temporary6 days
Internship17 days
Full-time19 days
Contract19 days
Part-time20 days
Volunteer28 days

LinkedIn France, March-April 2026.

Temporary positions on LinkedIn disappear in just 6 days median. Full-time roles last 19 days. Volunteer positions last 28 days.

Temporary roles are urgent by nature. The employer needs someone now, not in a month. If you are looking for temporary work, every day counts.

What This Means

Job postings are not static. They appear and disappear on different schedules depending on the platform, the industry, and the type of role. Understanding these rhythms can help you search more effectively.

If you are on Indeed, check daily. If you are on LinkedIn, a few times a week might be enough. And if you are in a fast-moving industry like tech or transportation, the window is even shorter.

This is another layer of the fingerprint. Each platform has not only a different mix of jobs, but a different pace. The same industry moves at different speeds depending on where the job is posted.
